Get rid of Headache

We all often hear the word headache from some or the other daily, if not we ourselves get it sometimes. Headaches may be due to various causes. Its not the same for all. Here I am with causes, symptoms and some solutions for your headache. Ayurveda classifies headaches mainly as Vata,Pitta, and kapha....

Causes of headache:

Headache is not only a problem in head....it is related to whole body. Since brain is the center of all the functions of the body it is affected with any disturbance in other parts of the body as well.So whenever you get a headache dont just run for a painkiller which suppresses just the ache for sometimes not the actual problem hidden with.

Emotional/Stress headaches:
This is very common these days with our 'No Time' life style.
Headaches due to anxiety, fear and insecurity are Vata types
stress, anger, jealousy, judgment, envy are the causes of Pitta headache.
Kapha headaches are due to depression, greed and possessiveness.

Refereed Headaches: This type of headache may be due to any infection in tooth/gum,nose,throat,ear,tonsils,sinuses.

Pathological headaches: They may be due to some dysfunction in vertex of the brain like in CVA (cerebro vascular accident), tumours in pituitary glands or high blood pressure.

Migraine headaches:
This is most commonly seen as a result of imbalance in both vata and pitta and it involves dilatation of cranial blood vessels or the carotid artery. Usually Migraine begins during Pitta time of the day (10 am to 2 pm) and losts for about 48-72 hours. There are various types of Migraine again.

Allergic headaches:
Allergic head aches are usually due to an allergic reaction and sensitivity to strong smell of certain toxic products such as disinfects, insecticides, perfumes, dyes, carbon monoxide, alcohol etc

Systemic headaches: Dysfunctions of various systems of the body like diabetes, congestive heart failure, nephritis, edema, hormonal imbalance etc.

Eye diseases such as glaucoma and vision problems might causes headache due to disturbance in Alochaka Pitta.

Metabolic imbalance like indigestion, absorption and assimilation, constipation are also reason behind some headaches.

Headache management:
Stop taking pain killers whenever you get headache. They create enormous side effects on you body disturbing all three doshas especially Vata and Pitta. And if you keep on taking eating painkillers you will never know the hidden cause behind your headache well before you reach emergency.Hence do not go for pain killers. Believe me I sometimes get headache and never had one pain killer for that.Consult a doctor if you get headaches very often to know the cause.Especially if you are above 30 years of age you must consult a doctor for you headache or let your doctor know about your headache when you go for general check ups.

Ayurvedic herbs and therapies are safe to go with. Here are few things you can do to get relief from headaches.

-Apply pastes or oils of Musk, nutmeg, camphor, sandalwood, jasmine, rose, clove, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom give relief from headache.
-Mixture of Camphor mixed with ghee applied over fore head should give a relief.
-Grape juice mixed with honey can be consumed in case of headache with nausea, dizziness, weakness.
-Take few drops of ghee on your hand and add saffron bits to it and rub your hands for 2-3 minutes. Then take out all the saffron and apply only the ghee on forehead.

-Avoid intake of oily foods especially foods containing MSG like fast foods,Chinese food,Gobi Manchurian, chocolates and dairy products.
-Avoid alcohol,carbonated drinks and meat.

It is a best and effective method used in Ayurveda in cases of acute and chronic headaches.
Pure ghee in Vata, brahmi gritha (ghee) in Pitta and Vacha Taila in Kapha are used for this purpose.
-Half tsp ginger paste mixed with 1 table spoon of milk and administered 2 drops ineach nostril twice a day should give better results.

Neti (Jalaneti)-Nasal Cleansing

I was watching Oprah show one day and its was an episode with Dr.Oz showing the procedure of Neti.Yes...Neti is a procedure from yoga, one among shat kriyas(six purification techniques). It is an easy procedure and is best used in sinus problems. It is other wise known as nasal irrigation or nasal cleansing.
There are two types in Neti, Jala(water) neti and sutra (string) neti. Jala neti is designed to remove the nasal irritants from upper pharynx and to moisten and rehydrate the nasal passages.
Sutra neti is relieves congestion ans stagnant mucous of the sinuses, eyes, throat and head.
Here I am writing all about Jala Neti for now.

Jala Neti:

You need a Neti pot for this and saline water. It is a simple procedure of washing nasal septi.
You get various types of Nethi pots in market made of steel, copper, clay, plastic etc. Its not expensive.
Wash it well before you use each time and keep.
Make saline water by adding approximately 1/4 tsp of pure(non-iodized) salt to a cup (about 8 oz) of luke warm water.Water should not be too cold or too hot. Is it is too cold it will cause nasal congestion. If it is hot it will burn the mucous membrane lining. It should better be closer to your body temperature.

Procedure:
-Fill the saline water in Neti pot. Stand in front of the sink with the head over the sink.
- Tuck your Chin slightly in and towards one side.
-Point the expelling nose down and forward.
-Now place the spigot of the neti pot into the upper nostril.
-Carefully tilt the Neti pot into the raised nostril so
that the saline water inside flows out from the bottom nostril.
-If the water doesn't come out of the bottom nostril just tilt the lower nostril forward and downwards to force the water toward gravity.
-The water flows down to the sink.
-Use one neti pot full of water to one nostril and repeat it through the other nostril again.
It can be done with in 3 minutes once you get practised
-Breath through the mouth during this procedure.
-When your are done with one nostril exhale deeply several times to clear nasal passages.
-Perform Kapalabhati pranayama after neti standing straight.
-Then perform shashankasana when all the water is expelled out and nose is dry.

Contraindications:

Jala neti is not contraindicated as such in any conditions, but it is better to perform under guidance of an expert if you suffer from hypertension, migraine ,nasal bleeding or with a history of nasal medications.

Uses of Jala Neti:
-Neti practised on daily basis helps to keep sinuses clean and make breathing easier and more free.
-Clears the nasal blockage from dust, pollen, irritants and pollutants.
-Saline water is similar to concentration of tears and it washes away viruses, bacteria and mucus from nasal passages.
-It s considered that nostrils are the gateway for many of the diseases. Neti helps to filter all the pollutants, dusts etc.
-It prevents all the respiratory disease like chronic sinusitis, hey fever and other lower respiratory tract diseases.
-Useful in Chronic headache
-It improves eye sight.
-It stops the hair fall and prevents hair from premature greying.

Note:Neti is done under the guidance of expert for the best results.

Caring your Hair

Over 5000 years old traditional healing system of medicine from India is shaping up as health spas and beauty salons globally due to its efficacy in skin care and hair care products majorly. Yes I am speaking about Ayurveda which recommends you to have a healthy lustrous and strong hair to steer you away from other chemical based hair care products. Here I come with some tips and ideas to enjoy healthy scalp with silky smooth hair.
As your eating habits affect whole body so as to hairs.Nutritious diet as well important to have healthy hairs which includes whole, fresh and organic foods.Vegetable rich diet including dark leafy greens, carrots, radish, broccoli, beets, fresh green herbs like cilantro, basil, mint and fruits like melons, berries and grapes. All foods rich in proteins, vitamin E,B and C are good for scalp.

Hair care Tips:
-It is good to massage your scalp with either coconut, almond or olive oil daily to improve the circulation before you wash you hairs.

-Using strong fragrant shampoos with rich lather might make you feel good for a while but it can damage your hair overtime.

-Dont ever brush your hair when it is wet.Allow the hair to dry by itself. Using hair dryers makes the scalp dry and causes dandruff and also damages the hair.Remover the tangles with your fingers slowly.Later brush your hairs with a comb in all direction to improve the circulation.

-Dont wash the hair in hot water. Its always good to wash the hair in cold water if you can not do so just use warm water.

-Clean you hair brush/comb once in a week and keep it clean out of dust, sweat, oil.
-Wash you pillow cover and bath towel often especially when you have dandruff problem.

Remedies for hair loss and dandruff:

Causes of hair loss can vary...some times due to some diseases or stress and sometimes due to hormonal imbalance. Other than that we all will have hair loss some time in our life without any major causes. Here is some of the things you can do at home to stop you hair loss.

-Make the decoction of tea and add 1 tsp of salt wash the hair

- Treating your hair with Amala (Indian gooseberry)/Nellikaayi is the best of all. Soak dried Amla during night in water and squeeze it well in the morning and wash the hair with that water. If you dont find dried Amla you can also use Amla powder which you can definitely get in any Ayurvedic pharmacy. This helps not only in hair loss but prevents hair from graying.

- Applying the Amla paste to scalp can also be done to get good results.

-Soak some methi in the night and grind it preferably with coconut water if not buttermilk and apply the paste all over the scalp. This will stop hair fall and dandruff. It helps the hair to grow thick.

- Egg yolk is the best conditioner for hair.

- Add 1/2 cup of fresh grated coconut to 1 cup of hot water and leave it for sometimes.then add one lemon juice to it and massage the scalp. Leave it for 1/2 hour and then wash. Do it once a week to stop hair fall.

-Applying paste of methi leaves to scalp and then washing also gives a silky soft long hair without dandruff.

-Sour curd is a very good remedy for dandruff. Apply sour curds with besan flour made into paste to scalp and leave it for 30 minutes and then wash the hair.

-Use sheeka powder to wash the hair if you can not get sheekakai powder use some herbal shampoo.

- Massage the scalp with olive oil and leave it over night to fight dandruff.

-Soak some neem leaves in water overnight and rinse the head in that water.

-Can apply fresh Aloe vera gel over the scalp and later rinse with water mixed with 1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar.

-Heat coconut oil with 1-2 camphor and apply warm oil to scalp is efficient to fight dandruff.

-Applying green gram paste to scalp works good too.

-Hibiscus flowers as well as leaves are very good hair conditioners and also alleviates Pitta.

-Henna is a great conditioner for hair. Apply henna to your hair once in a while gives good color to hair, stops graying of hair naturally resulting in silky soft hair.
Wash you head the day before you plan to apply henna to remove oil from the hairs.Mix Henna powder either with tea decoction or buttermilk to make paste and keep it overnight.Next day mix the paste well and apply it to scalp evenly. For good results keep it for at least 4-5 hrs.If you are a person who catches cold very easily reduce the time.
Then rinse the hair only with water without shampooing. It regulates the heat of you body. You will definitely feel the difference the same day!

-In my native we use leaves of Arjuna(Terminalia Arjuna) tree for hairs. The fresh leaves of Arjuna soaked in cold water for sometimes and then squeezed. We can get a gel kind of solution which is used to hair during head bath.

Hair oil for your type:

If you are Vata predominant sesame oil (Tila Taila) and Almond oil are best choice as base oil.
Those who are Pitta predominant soothing oil like coconut oil is good.
For Kapha predominant persons olive oil and seseme oil will be good choice.

Herbal hair oils like Bringamalaka, Neelabhringadi, Brahmi etc. Herbs like Amla (Embelica officinalis), Bringaraja (Eclipta Alba), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri),Hibiscus,Methi, Henna specially stand for healthy hair.

I think trying all these should definitely help you to have shiny, soft, silky, long healthy hair. This is all natural hence you dont have to be scared of damaging your hairs with harmulf chemicals.

Kapalabhati

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Importance of Kapalabhati

Kapalabhati is one among the Shat kriyas in Yoga according to Hatha Yoga.Similar to Panchakarmas in Ayurveda Shat kriyas are used to balance the three main doshas(vata-pitta-kapha) of the body. The word "Kapala" in sanskrit means 'skull' and 'Bhati' means 'shine' So kapalabhati is the action which cleanses and shines the brain by stimulating the brain cells. It is a heating form of Pranayama.Kapalabhati helps to make the movements of diaphragm very easy and controlled and helps to remove toxic air from the lungs and takes in the fresh air. This is rather be called as abdominal breathing since it majorly involves abdominal muscles.

Instructions:

- Kapalabhati can be practised during early morning in empty stomach or you can have fruit juice or water or tea 30 mins before practising the procedure.
- Bladder and bowel should be empty before practising.
- It should never be done when the stomach is full. One should wait for upto 3 hrs after food to perform this.
-It should not be done during pregnancy and menstruation. -It is contraindicated if you have had a surgery recently or inflammation of the lungs/emphysema and hypertension.

Procedure:

-Sit in Padmasana or Siddhasana with your spine/back and head erect.
-Take 2-3 deep breaths with inhalation and exhalation through the nose as a prerequisite.

-start with exhalation and then breath in to allow the air to fill in the belly to expand totally.

-Now do a forceful exhalation a little deeper than the ordinary breathing. At the same time contract the front abdominal muscles suddenly and with a little force. You are really pushing out the air here.

-Then inhale by simply relaxing the abdominal muscles.
In this procedure do not do any retention of the breath.
-The beginner should start with eleven expulsions in each round. You can do this for 10-15 mins daily with a break once in every five minutes.
-Dont strain or struggle. Just relax for a while if you feel tired or stressed.

Benefits of Kapalabhati :

-Kapalabhati in general helps the whole body.
-Each exhalation stimulates the center of abdomen and activates the prana. It clears harmful toxins from the body.
- It is useful to improve the bowel movements.
- Deep inhalation takes good amount of oxygen to the lungs and helps to purify the blood.

Go and grow Vegetarian..say goodbye to meat

My previous posts were all about losing weight and the one thing that majorly contribute there is to be a vegetarian.
Ayurveda along with Sharirik doshas like Vata,Pitta and Kapha also includes Maanasik doshas such as Satva, Raja anta Tama. Eating meat is highly Rajasik and Tamasik which disturbs body as well as mind makes man sick. Man is not carnivorous basically. Before going vegetarian just know something about meat.Meat is dead food especially by the time you pick them at shops.
Human digestive system: As I said before man is not carnivorous and his digestive system is not so strong as carnivorous to eat and digest meat. Meat makes the digestion very slow and hence the other systems in the body seem to be at rest during meat digestion in animals. But human beings are very different from animals. We can not just eat and sleep the whole day. So if one eats the meat it makes the digestion very slow in human and becomes more thamasik (dull, depressed)

How cruel is it?
Do just watch how the meat is taken out of an animal. I just happened to watch one of videos from slaughter house and I really couldn't watch half of it.If you wanna watch the Video here it is..

Just imagine the anxiety, fear, pain, stress and strain those dumb animals must have gone through in slaughter house.Lots and lots of biochemicals are released during this process in their body which later enters the human body through meat. This makes man more anxious, fearful, tensed and confused.Unwanted fat accumulates in the body and body systems are disturbed. One looses the inner feelings.
Considering all these just think before you go for meat next time.

Reasons to go Vegan:
According to Ayurveda and Yoga Vegetarian food is sathvik in nature.Sathvik meant for purity, healthy, blissful quality.

Man can even live without eating non-vegetarian.There are millions out there who are born vegetarians and live vegetarian forever.I am proud to be one among them. There is already a revolution for vegetarianism in the west.

Most of your favourite Hollywood celebrities have taken the pledge to be vegetarian like Pamela Anderson,Leonardo DiCaprio ,Tobey McGuire, Brad Pitt,Bryan Adams,Jerry Seinfeld, Martina Navratilova and the list goes on.

Vegetarians live healthier and longer than non-vegetarians. A research shows that Chinese people who eat the least
amount of fat and animal products have the lowest risk of cancer, obesity, heart attack, hypertension, diabetes and other chronic degenerative diseases. And a British study that tracked 6,000 vegetarians and 5,000 meat eaters for 12 years found that vegetarians were 40 percent less likely to die from cancer during that time and 20 percent less likely to die from other diseases

You will help to reduce greenhouse effect by reducing the wastes and air pollution that happens during processing of meat.
You can save money fruits and vegetables costs less comparative to chicken and fish
Even vegetarian dishes are tasty and there are substitutes for meat to be a vegan.

How to become vegetarian
To start with you can have vegetarian substitutes for meat. Nowadays you can find a lot of vegetarian items in supermarket.
some veggie version of your Non-veg meal
-Use lentils as substitute for ground beef/chicken in tacos and burritos
-Have soy patties instead of beef/chicken/fish as patties
-Use tofu instead of meat balls in spaghetti.Even you get Meatless meatballs, veggie broth for chicken broth and veggie dogs for hot dogs in market. This way you can enjoy the taste and also health.
-Buy a new vegetarian product every time you visit grocery store and try new vegetarian recipes out of it.You may not like it at first since you are not used to it. But the second and third time you start liking it.
-Surf the store for vegetarian food items and you will definitely find new things everyday there.
-You can not give up eating meat all at once for sure. Try eating vegan once week and increase the frequency slowly to reduce the meal with meat.
-Have some patience to make it slowly. You can not become a vegan overnight.
-Eat a wide variety of foods. Include legumes, fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your diet. This is the best way to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients you need.
-Use organically grown eggs and dairy products if you include them in your diet. The cows and chickens are usually treated more humanely on organic farms, and you won't have to worry about unwanted residues in your food.
-Buy a vegetarian cookbook. Impress your non-vegetarian friends with how great veggie food can be.
-Visit vegetarian restaurants in your city. Support their effort.

-You may find people teasing you often for not eating meat. Dont ever be ashamed of your beliefs instead feel proud to be a vegan for making animals alive, happy. Explain the reason for your decision and let them understand.
-Many people consider fish as vegetarian. No its not.

-A balanced vegetarian diet should include:

Grains and cereals: Wholegrain bread, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, rice
Legumes, nuts and seeds: Soya beans. kidney beans, split peas, lentils, almonds, cashews, sesame seeds
Fruit and vegetables: As much as you want - think variety. Try new fruits and vegetables and include them in your diet every day
Dairy or soya products: Look out for fat free and reduced calorie options for milk, yogurts, cheeses.

So folks....decide at the moment and start to be vegetarian today!

Ayurveda to lose weight

Losing weight will be effective and easy when you combine Ayurveda with Yoga practices. Ayurveda resets your body and mind to regulate the functions of its own by calming the mind and enhancing the digestive fire.
Treatment for overweight and obese in Ayurveda differs from person to person according to ones own body constitution (Prakriti).People with Kapha constitution are more prone to obesity and over weight.

Causes of obesity/overweight in Ayurveda:
- Lack of physical exertion (avyayama)
- diet and life styles which increase Kapha
- Sleeping in day time
- Consuming sweet and fatty food
- genetic factors

Our Gastro-intestinal tract is clogged by toxins, unwanted fats and undigested food. This results in poor absorption of necessary nutrients to the body. This is called 'Ama' in Ayurveda. Ama tends to clog up the circulatory, lymph, and other channels of the body. People who are overweight almost always have an excess of ama in their bodies. Getting rid of the body of its ama is a main strategy of Ayurvedic treatment. That is detoxification with shodhana therapy.

Ayurvedic ways to lose weight:

-Follow Dinacharya (Daily lifestyle regimen) and diet according to your constitution
-Start a diet with which ignites your digestive fire like
Soups and herbal chutneys with some herbs and spices like ginger, black pepper, turmeric and asafoetida(hing)
- Use herbs and spices those are bitter, or astringent, pungent like cumin, ginger, mustard seed, cayenne, and black pepper. Use them generously in your cooking.
-Instead of having coffee and tea have home made herbal teas using the same spices.
-Fasting once in a while with only liquids(like fruit juices, milk and water) is also useful in reducing weight.
-Practice yoga and meditation according to your body type.

- Make lunch your main meal of the day

-Sleep less. Avoid sleeping in afternoons which helps to increase burning calories. This avoids slowing of basal metabolic rate.
-Substitute rice with wheat,Ragi and Barley.
-Barley taken along with "Methi" reduces the excessive fat from the body.
-Use Garlic in your diet since it reduces the blood cholesterol
-Have a steam bath once in a while.
-use of drumstick leaves, radish, cucumber, raw cabbage, spinach, bitter gourd in diet reduces fat.
-Drink butter milk everyday to reduce weight. You can make sweet or spicy lassi and enjoy.
-Avoid sweets, chocolates, ice creams, carbonated drinks, alcohol, deep fried junks. Eat fresh and hot food with vegetables and fruits.

However treatment of obesity in Ayurveda is complete only when it includes

- Udwartana(massage with herbal paste) & Swedana (steaming)- To reduce the meda lipids
-Abhyanga Mardana & Swedana with Vata-kapha pacifying oils
- Basti (Lekahn Basti)
-Herbal supplements and Teas
- Diet control
-Yoga / Exercise program/meditation/pranayama
